The art of communication since 2012

How Belgoprocess makes sustainability tangible
How do you combine ecological, technical and social added value in practice?
Many of KDV – Language & More’s clients demonstrate how to do this every day, and one of them is Belgoprocess. Since 2022, we have been working alongside them to reinforce that added value through storytelling, both internally and externally. What began as an editorial collaboration grew into an intensive process in which we were able to closely follow and help shape their evolving sustainability policy.
As a subsidiary of NIRAS (the National Institute for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials), Belgoprocess plays a key role in the nuclear sector and bears a significant social responsibility. In recent years, we have seen how their sustainability strategy has become not only broader, but also more concrete and measurable. Whereas sustainability was initially used primarily as a framework, we now see a clear deepening of its scope. Transparency, reliability and knowledge sharing are central to this. For instance, we collaborated on communications regarding the decommissioning of historic facilities, with the aim of maximising decontamination and generating as little waste as possible.
Another example is the energy strategy of Belgoprocess. Their solar park – equipped with micro-inverters meeting the highest safety standards – now covers a significant proportion of their electricity consumption. The fact that renewable energy and nuclear safety go hand in hand is a message we help to convey in their staff and stakeholder communications.
Openness as a guiding principle
We also saw how their policy is becoming increasingly embedded in international frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals. The switch to fluorine-free fire-extinguishing foams ahead of the legal requirement, the systematic use of rainwater in processes, the electrification of the vehicle fleet and the development of a circular procurement policy are just a few of the many initiatives we have been able to translate into inspiring and clear messages.
What particularly strikes us as communications specialists is the openness with which Belgoprocess approaches sustainability. Stakeholders are involved, internal working groups take responsibility, and there is room for dialogue and participation. All of this results in reports and publications that not only inform but also inspire.
For KDV – Language & More, this collaboration is more than just writing texts. It is about helping to raise the profile of an organisation that is making the leap from a legal framework to strategic commitment. A story of knowledge, transparency and responsibility, which we are proud to help tell.
